Update on Old Golden Bear Shopping Center in UA
Work is set to restart soon at the Golden Bear shopping center site in Upper Arlington. The shopping center – once home to businesses like Colin’s Coffee, Figlio, and Basil -closed last summer and was demolished soon after. Planned for the site is a 5 story building with 76 condominiums situated above office space and ground-floor retail.
Although the fenced-off site near the corner of Riverside Drive and Fishinger Road has been quiet in recent weeks, vertical construction is scheduled to begin within the next month according to Scott Patton, Managing Partner of Arcadia Development.
The overall timeline for the development has been moved back about a year – it’s now scheduled to open in the summer of 2026 instead of 2025.
“We have a great team and we strive to keep our schedule, but there are always unexpected impacts when doing complex, ground-up, new construction infill projects,” Patton said, explaining that a variety of factors led to the delay, including road construction on Fishinger, bad weather that disrupted the site-prep work, and, most of all, “supply chain and labor cost disruptions caused by inflationary instability.”
First proposed in the fall of 2018, plans for the development were revised multiple times before gaining an initial approval from Upper Arlington’s Board of Zoning and Planning in 2019. A subsequent proposal to replace the office space in the building with more residential units was not approved by the board.
